Event
description
One
name more than any other is responsible for keeping
Europe’s winemakers awake at night. The shudders
of apprehension that the mere mention of Australia evokes
are not hard to understand. With an incredible speed
Australia’s wine industry went from a mere trickle
at the beginning of the 1970s to an unstoppable surge
by the end of the 20th century. The result of Australia-mania
has been that some commentators have tended to say the
country’s wine philosophy emphasises instant commercial
appeal at the expense of traditional vinous complexity.
The wines don’t age, and are all about primary
fruit and oaky richness and not much else. Like all
the old generalisations, that statement is there to
be shot down by a wave of practitioners intent on competing
with the best the world has to offer.
We
will taste some of the top examples of Australian wine
from an array of styles and regions.
Wine
list:
Penfolds
Bin 389 – Classic wine from the maker of Grange
Wynns John Riddoch – One of the legends from Coonawarra
Henschke Mount Edelstone – One of the best Shiraz
producers in Australia
